Vanessa hired attorney Maya Bell.
Smart.
Maya immediately separated:
the affair,
the consulting contract,
the altered settlement.
Vanessa admitted sleeping with Adrian.
Not proudly now.
She denied changing legal documents.
Then she produced invoices.
Redline had actually done work.
Press summaries.
Competitive research.
Social-media messaging.
Event planning.
Some invoices inflated?
Possibly.
But not pure sham.
Then Vanessa explained the $25,000 retention.
Adrian had asked her to help manage publicity if the divorce became public before acquisition.
Rachel stared.
“Manage whose publicity?”
“His.”
“Against Claire?”
Vanessa hesitated.
There.
Then texts.
ADRIAN:
If she starts telling people I abandoned a pregnant wife, we need a cleaner narrative.
VANESSA:
What narrative?
ADRIAN:
She’s emotional. Difficult. Unstable lately.
Vanessa replied:
That’s cruel.
Adrian:
It’s true.
Then, two hours later:
VANESSA:
I can work with “private marital breakdown, business unaffected.”
Not innocent.
Not the mastermind either.
Then Rachel found another message.
Adrian:
If Claire melts down publicly, document everything.
Vanessa:
You think she will?
Adrian:
I know her.
The courtroom explosion had not been purely spontaneous from his perspective.
Adrian expected Claire to lose control.
Maybe wanted it.
Then Vanessa admitted something worse.
She had recorded Claire during a family dinner three weeks earlier while secretly provoking her about Adrian.
“Why?”
Vanessa cried.
“Because he told me she’d come after me.”
Claire looked at her sister.
“You were building a case.”
Vanessa whispered:

“I thought I was protecting myself.”
That phrase would appear many times.
