Chapter 1 - HER NAME ONLY

Claire Carter rolled toward the front porch in her wheelchair and saw her life packed into two suitcases.

Daniel dragged them across the concrete and threw them down in front of her.

Lily, twelve, stood behind Claire crying.

Noah, eight, clutched his backpack so tightly his knuckles were white.

Daniel pointed toward the driveway.

“GET OUT.”

Claire stared at him.

Daniel pointed at the children.

“Take your kids. I don’t need you.”

Lily grabbed Claire’s shoulder.

“Mom…”

Claire looked down at the suitcases.

Then up at Daniel.

And slowly smiled.

He noticed.

His expression tightened.

He pulled a new front-door key from his pocket.

“I changed the locks.”

Claire looked directly at him.

“On MY house?”

Daniel gave a short laugh.

“It’s OUR house.”

A black sedan pulled into the driveway.

Daniel turned.

Rebecca Sloan stepped out carrying a legal folder.

A county deputy followed.

Rebecca walked straight to the porch.

Opened the folder.

Slapped a certified deed into Daniel’s hands.

“Her name only.”

Daniel’s confidence disappeared.

The deputy looked at the changed front lock.

Then at Daniel.

Rebecca opened a second document.

Frozen-account notice.

Claire rolled one decisive step closer.

“And we found the $38,000.”

Daniel froze.

The deputy shifted toward him.

Daniel looked from the deed to Claire.

For the first time, he realized the person leaving might not be her.
