The Carter house had belonged to Claire’s mother.
When Patricia Hale died, she left it directly to Claire.
No trust.
No shared inheritance.
No Daniel.
Claire inherited the house before marrying him.
The deed remained:
CLAIRE HALE CARTER, SOLE OWNER.
Daniel had lived there for eleven years.
They had used marital income for:
repairs,
taxes,
landscaping,
some renovations.
That could create financial claims in divorce.
It did not place his name on the deed.
Daniel knew the house was originally Claire’s.
But he had convinced himself long occupancy made it equally his.
His lawyer would later call that:
