Chapter 2 - THE ACCIDENT
Six months earlier, Claire had been driving home from work when another vehicle ran a red light.
She survived.
Her spine was not severed.
But pelvic fractures, nerve damage, and severe weakness left her unable to walk independently for months.
Doctors expected improvement.
Not certainty.
Daniel heard only one thing:
wheelchair.
At first he was supportive.
He helped her transfer.
Cooked dinner.
Drove the children to school.
Then patience became resentment.
He complained about:
appointments,
equipment,
bathroom assistance,
missed work,
noise from physical therapy.
Claire noticed the change.
She excused it.
Caregiver stress, she told herself.
Marriage was difficult.
Accidents were difficult.
Then Daniel began saying:
“This house isn’t built for you anymore.”
