Chapter 14 - WALKING

Nine months after the porch confrontation, Claire walked twenty-three feet with forearm crutches.

Lily cried harder than Claire did.

Noah counted every step.

One.

Two.

Three.

Claire still used the wheelchair most of the day.

Recovery was not a cinematic cure.

Some days were better.

Some worse.

Daniel attended one physical-therapy session because the parenting coordinator required family medical education.

He watched Claire stand.

Then looked away.

Later he said:

“I thought you’d always need the chair.”

Claire answered:

“Would that have made what you did okay?”

May you like

“No.”

That was the first honest answer he gave without qualification.
