Chapter 12 - THE DIVORCE
Elena filed for divorce.
Ethan asked for counseling.
Not to reconcile.
To understand co-parenting if the baby arrived safely.
Elena agreed to limited sessions.
The therapist asked Ethan:
“What did marriage mean in your family?”
He said:
“Joining.”
Then:
“Joining us.”
Not building something new.
That was the flaw.
Ethan had never emotionally left his parents’ household.
He simply brought Elena inside it.
Then when she resisted, he treated her as disruptive.
Elena said:
“I thought I married you.”
Ethan answered:
“You did.”
“No. I married your family system with your face on it.”
He cried.
She did not soften.
Then came practical issues.
Housing.
Medical care.
Future parenting.
No automatic termination of Ethan’s parental rights.
No using pregnancy as revenge leverage.
Elena requested safeguards.
Supervised contact initially if medically and legally appropriate.
No Linda.
No Robert unsupervised until trust questions resolved.
No access to Elena’s medical portal.
No decision-making through grandparents.
Then Ethan said:
“I want to be there when the baby is born.”
Elena answered:
“No.”
He looked shocked.
She continued:
“You lost the privilege of being in my medical space.”
That distinction mattered.
Fatherhood did not create unlimited access to her body.
He could receive appropriate information later.
Birth room was Elena’s decision.
Then the therapist asked:
“Do you hate him?”
Elena thought.
“No.”
That surprised even her.
Then:

“I’m afraid of what he becomes when his mother is angry.”
That was worse.
