Chapter 9 - THE BABY
Elena remained hospitalized for two days.
The baby continued doing well.
No promise beyond medicine.
No dramatic guarantee.
The bleeding stopped.
Her obstetrician explained:
A small amount of bleeding in pregnancy can have several causes.
The trauma and stress were clinically relevant.
But they would not invent a direct chain without evidence.
Elena appreciated that.
The baby did not need to become courtroom symbolism.
Then Ethan’s lawyer tried to emphasize:
No fetal injury.
No placental abruption.
No pregnancy loss.
Daniel answered:
“Outcome is not consent.”
The phrase stayed.
Linda’s defense also argued the leg strike was intended as “correction,” not serious harm.
That word made Elena furious.
Correction.
She was twenty-nine.
Pregnant.
Not a child.
Not a subordinate.
Then investigators found family messages.
Linda:
Elena is becoming impossible.
Ethan:
She thinks being pregnant means she gets final say.
Linda:
Then remind her whose family she married into.
Ethan:
I’m trying.
Elena stared.
Marriage as annexation.
Then another:
Linda:
After the baby comes she’ll calm down.
Robert:
Let them handle it.
Ethan:
She needs structure.
Structure.
Correction.
Respect.
Calm.
Words repeatedly used to avoid:
control,
fear,
violence,
silence.
Then the hospital social worker asked Elena:
“What do you want most right now?”
She answered:
May you like
“To never go back.”
That became the clearest decision in the whole case.
