Chapter 13 - MARA MEETS ELENA

Mara agreed to meet Elena once.
Neutral café.
Daytime.
No cameras.
No lawyers in the room.
Mara was thirty-three now.
Married.
No children.
Not because she could not.
Because she chose not to try again.
Elena did not ask why.
Then Mara looked at Elena’s leg brace.
Her face tightened.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena said:
“You didn’t do this.”
“I should have warned someone.”
“How?”
Mara laughed sadly.
“Exactly.”
They sat.
Then Elena asked:
“Did Ethan hit you?”
“No.”
“Did Linda?”
“Once. She grabbed me hard. Threw a mug near me. Never like your leg.”
“Then why were you so afraid?”
Mara thought.
“Because nobody had to hit me every day. They just had to make sure every door led back to them.”
Elena remembered:
keys,
passport,
appointments,
blocked exits,
family consensus.
Yes.
Then Mara said:
“The worst part wasn’t Linda.”
Elena looked up.
“It was Ethan watching her decide what reality was.”
That sentence matched Elena’s experience exactly.
Then Mara told her something new.
After the miscarriage, Ethan visited once.
Alone.
He cried.
Apologized.
Said:
“I should have protected you.”
Mara asked him to leave.
A week later Linda called Mara’s sister and said:
“Ethan only apologized because Mara manipulates guilt.”
Within months Ethan adopted Linda’s version again.
His insight had not survived family pressure.
Elena understood then:
Ethan could change.
He had simply never practiced staying changed.
May you like
That would matter later as a father.
But Elena would not test it with her safety.
