Chapter 5 - THE LOCKED DRAWER
Police obtained a warrant for portions of the Carter home relevant to the assault and potential confinement.
Inside the kitchen office was a locked drawer.
Not secret documents.
Household control.
Elena’s spare keys.
Passport.
Medical insurance card.
A copy of her prenatal schedule.
Ethan claimed the drawer was for safekeeping.
Elena had not known her passport was there.
She thought it was in her desk.
Then a printed calendar:
ELENA APPOINTMENTS.
Notes added in Linda’s handwriting.
Week 24:
Asked too many questions at OB.
Week 26:
Still wants to work.
Week 28:
Refused family dinner.
Week 30:
Discuss hospital choice.
Elena stared.
She had been living inside someone else’s observation system.
Then one line:
After delivery — no visitors first week except family.
Another:
Ethan needs to keep her from making decisions while emotional.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“Did you agree to this?”
“No.”
Then:
“Did you know they were tracking your appointments?”
“No.”
The drawer also contained old papers.
Not hers.
Mara’s.
A photocopy of a prenatal appointment card.
A handwritten note:
MARA — DO NOT DRIVE AFTER ARGUMENTS.
Another:
Keep car keys upstairs.
Elena’s stomach turned.
Same method.
Different woman.
Then Laura found a faded envelope.
Return address:
Mara Kent.
Postmarked seven years earlier.
Unopened.
Addressed to Ethan.
Across the front, in Linda’s handwriting:
NO NEED TO REOPEN THIS.
Ethan had never opened it.
Or claimed he had not.
Daniel said:
“That letter is not automatically yours.”
Elena nodded.
But its existence mattered.
Mara had written.

She had not vanished without explanation.
Someone had decided her voice was unnecessary.
