Chapter 8 - ROBERT'S SILENCE
Robert Carter requested to speak with Elena through attorneys.
She refused.
Then changed her mind.
One written statement only.
Robert wrote:
I did not touch you.
Elena almost stopped reading.
Then:
That is what I told myself.
Better.
He described forty years with Linda.
She was forceful.
He was quiet.
People praised them as balanced.
In reality, Robert survived conflict by disappearing emotionally.
When Linda shouted at Ethan as a child, Robert took him fishing later.
Never confronted Linda.
When Linda insulted relatives, Robert changed the subject.
When Mara fled, Robert told neighbors:
“Pregnancy is hard.”
He always found a neutral sentence.
Then:
I thought neutrality made me decent.
Elena read that twice.
Then:
I see now that when one person has power, neutrality usually serves that person.
That mattered.
Robert admitted seeing Linda strike Elena.
Admitted seeing Elena fall.
Admitted Ethan refuse help.
Then watching football while Elena remained in the kitchen.
Why?
Because Linda said:
“She’ll get up.”
Robert believed what allowed him to stay comfortable.
Then he wrote:
I heard the back door open.
Elena froze.
Robert had heard her escape.
Did he check?
No.
He assumed she was being dramatic.
Then the worst line:
When Mrs. Greene’s porch light came on, I turned the television louder.
Elena put the paper down.
