Chapter 3 - MARA KENT

Mara Kent had lived with the Carters for six months.

Ethan was twenty-six.

She was twenty-five.

Pregnant with their first child.

Mrs. Greene remembered her because Mara loved gardening.

She planted basil by the fence.

Complained about Linda.

Laughed too loudly.

Then stopped laughing.

Over several months, Mrs. Greene noticed changes.

Mara stopped driving.

Stopped visiting.

Stopped answering from the porch.

Linda began saying:

“She needs quiet.”

Then one night, near midnight, Mrs. Greene heard a crash.

Minutes later Mara came through the yard.

Barefoot.

One sleeve torn.

Crying.

No dramatic blood.

No obvious severe injury.

But terrified.

Mrs. Greene let her inside.

Mara said:

“I have to get away from them.”

Then Ethan arrived.

He stood on Mrs. Greene’s porch.

Calm.

Too calm.

He said Mara was having a “pregnancy panic episode.”

He asked Mrs. Greene to send her home.

Mrs. Greene refused.

Then Robert came.

Then Linda.

Three adults repeating the same story.

Mara was unstable.

Hormonal.

Confused.

Overreacting.

Mrs. Greene called Mara’s sister instead.

Mara left before morning.

Three days later Ethan told neighbors:

“She terminated the pregnancy and disappeared.”

Mrs. Greene never saw Mara again.

Elena stared.

“Did you believe him?”

Mrs. Greene looked ashamed.

“Eventually.”

“Why?”

“Because Mara never came back.”

That answer hurt.

Absence had become evidence against the person who fled.

Then Elena asked:

“Did she lose the baby?”

Mrs. Greene shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

No one did.

Then Officer Chen returned with a question.

“Mrs. Carter, did your husband ever tell you he had been engaged before?”

Elena answered:

“No.”

Then Laura placed a photograph on the table.

Taken from an old neighborhood association archive.

Ethan.

Linda.

Robert.

And a young woman with dark hair standing beside them.

Mara.

Her hand rested protectively on a pregnant belly.

Elena looked at the date.

Then at Ethan’s smiling face.

The photograph had been taken in the same backyard.
