Chapter 11 - LUCAS'S BEST DEFENSE
Lucas faced criminal investigation and emergency family-court proceedings.
His attorney did not claim innocence.
Instead:
Lucas intended a staged, brief relocation.
He believed Maisie would be continuously supervised.
He did not authorize the second destination.
He panicked when the child disappeared.
He cooperated after discovery.
All true.
Then the ugly part.
He knowingly:
placed Maisie in a dumpster,
caused terror,
deceived Rachel,
created a false incident,
planned to use that incident in custody litigation.
That was enough.
He asked for supervised contact with Maisie.
Rachel wanted none.
The child specialist recommended:
no immediate in-person contact,
then therapeutic reintroduction only if Maisie stabilized.
Maisie had nightmares.
She cried when lids closed.
Laundry hamper.
Toy chest.
Car trunk at a grocery lot.
Anything enclosed.
The dumpster had lasted minutes.
The fear lasted months.
Lucas saw one video of Maisie screaming when a toy bin lid fell.
He cried.
Maya said:
“Remorse matters.”
Rachel answered:
“It doesn’t give him access.”
