Chapter 13 - TESSA SPEAKS
Tessa carried the most guilt after Rachel.
She knew something.
Not enough.
She had seen:
Elaine planning,
Grant’s name,
the rental key,
Lucas whispering about “one hour.”
She never asked directly.
Why?
Because in Elaine’s family, asking meant disloyalty.
Tessa told police:
“I thought they were trying to scare Rachel.”
Detective Cole asked:
“And that seemed okay?”
Tessa cried.
“No.”
“Then why stay?”
“I thought if I objected, Mom would cut me out too.”

Elaine controlled through belonging.
Tessa eventually testified against her mother and brother.
Not dramatically.
Carefully.
She admitted her own failure.
Rachel later apologized for slapping her.
Tessa said:
“I deserved you being angry.”
Rachel answered:
“You didn’t deserve being hit.”
That distinction became important.
Tessa began seeing Maisie again months later.
Supervised at first.
Then normal aunt visits.
Because unlike Elaine and Lucas, Tessa had not tried to possess the child.
She had failed to stop people who did.
