Chapter 8 - A WOMAN NAMED NORA

Nora Mercer was forty-one.

Elementary-school nurse.

Married.

Two children.

Grant arrived at her house carrying a terrified toddler.

He told her:

“Family emergency.”

Nora did not believe him.

Maisie kept crying for Mommy.

Nora asked:

“Where are her parents?”

Grant said:

“They know.”

Nora demanded names.

Grant refused.

Then Nora noticed:

no car seat tag,

no diaper bag,

no written emergency information.

Wrong.

She told her husband to call police.

Grant panicked.

He left.

Not with Maisie.

Alone.

Nora contacted local police at 6:47 p.m.

Why had Rachel not been told until morning?

Because Grant gave the wrong family surname.

He called the child:

Maisie Hale.

Rachel’s maiden name.

Local police entered the child as unidentified pending verification.

Regional alerts crossed overnight.

At 2:13 a.m., database match connected:

Maisie Carter missing from one jurisdiction

with

unknown Maisie “Hale” safe in another.

Rachel got the call at 2:26 a.m.

She collapsed onto the kitchen floor.

Alive.

Safe.

When she reached the station, Maisie saw her through the glass and screamed:

May you like

“MOMMY!”

Rachel held her for nearly ten minutes before anyone tried to ask another question.
