Chapter 7 - THE MAN ON THE BUS

Grant was found the next morning.
Bus terminal.
Two counties away.
Alone.
Police detained him.
His first words:
“The kid is safe.”
Rachel almost stopped breathing when Detective Cole relayed it.
“Where?”
Grant refused until counsel arrived.
Then told the story.
He reached the dumpster.
Opened it.
Maisie was crying so hard she was gagging.
He lifted her out.
She screamed:
“Mommy!”
Grant put her in the SUV.
Then his phone rang.
Elaine.
She changed the destination.
Not the rental.
Another address.
Grant said:
“That wasn’t the deal.”
Elaine told him:
“Lucas changed his mind.”
Lucas had not.
Grant believed her.
Why?
Because Elaine hired him.
New address:
a small house outside New Haven.
Grant drove halfway.
Then Maisie became sick from crying.
Vomited on her pajamas.
Grant panicked.
He stopped at a pharmacy parking lot.
He called Elaine.
No answer.
Lucas.
No answer.
Why no answer?
Because Rachel was confronting everyone and police had arrived.
Grant looked at the toddler in the back seat.
Then made the one decent decision of the night.
He did not take her to the new house.
May you like
He called someone else.
His sister.
