Chapter 7 - THE FOOD LOG
Diane kept a feeding log.
That surprised Hannah.
Breakfast:
half banana.
Milk.
Lunch:
half sandwich.
Water.
Snack:
none if lunch unfinished.
Dinner:
parents.
At first it looked ordinary.
Then pediatric nutritionist reviewed quantities.
Too small for some days.
Inconsistent.
Not automatically abusive.
Then one note:
NO EXTRA BREAD. SHE NEEDS TO LEARN.
Another:
CRIED 22 MINUTES. DID NOT GIVE IN.
Another:
GIRLS IN THIS FAMILY GET HEAVY FAST.
Hannah stared.
There.
Not succession.
Body control.
Diane had imposed adult beliefs on a toddler.
Then one chilling entry:
NOAH ALWAYS ATE WHAT WAS SERVED. BOYS ARE EASIER.
Different children.
Different ages.
Still comparison.
The food restriction came from Diane’s gendered resentment and control, not a direct scheme to alter the trust.
The business conflict did not cause the abuse.
It revealed the same worldview:
boys inherit,
girls should be smaller,
quiet,
grateful,
less demanding.
