Chapter 3 - THE BUTTON IN HER POCKET

The button was not a weapon.

It was a remote trigger linked to Claire’s phone.

One press:

send a prewritten emergency package to Noah Grant, Claire’s attorney Maya Sloan, and board member Judith Price.

The package contained:

photographs of the forged documents,

the board minutes,

a voice memo recorded before Claire entered the room,

and a message:

IF DANIEL OR EVELYN PREVENT ME FROM LEAVING, CALL POLICE AND FREEZE ALL BOARD ACTION.

Claire had prepared it in the elevator.

Not because she expected hired men.

Because she finally understood how far Daniel had gone.

Victor Dane stepped between Claire and the door again.

Claire looked at him.

“You’re being recorded.”

He hesitated.

Daniel snapped:

“She’s bluffing.”

Claire answered:

“Ask Noah.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

He ignored it.

Then Evelyn’s.

Then Victor’s.

Victor checked the screen.

His face tightened.

“Mr. Bennett.”

Daniel glared.

“What?”

“Police are downstairs.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

For the first time, he stopped acting like control was inevitable.

Then he recovered.

Fast.

“Fine.”

He turned to Victor.

“Stand down.”

Smart.

No more touching.

No extra evidence.

Then Daniel looked at Claire.

“You assaulted me first.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

“You slapped me.”

True.

He smiled.

“And we have cameras.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Daniel had positioned the room.

Security cameras captured:

Claire entering furious.

Claire slapping Daniel.

Claire shoving him into a table.

Claire struggling with security.

Would they capture the forged documents?

Audio?

Maybe.

Then Evelyn said:

“Now tell the police your version.”

Claire understood.

Daniel did not need to prove innocence.

He needed chaos.

Mutual violence.

Marital dispute.

Corporate conflict.

Enough ambiguity to slow everyone down while his board resolution remained effective.

Then the conference-room door opened.

Police entered.

Daniel lifted both hands.

May you like

Calm.

“My wife attacked me.”
