Chapter 2 - THE REPORT THAT ARRIVED FIRST
Daniel took Emma straight to the hospital.
Imaging showed no new tear.
No fracture.
But the surgical site was inflamed and bruised.
The orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Helen Morris, asked what happened.
Emma looked at Daniel.
Daniel said:
“Tell her.”
Emma whispered:
“Rachel hit me with a cane.”
Dr. Morris stopped writing.
“On the surgical shoulder?”
Emma nodded.
Then:
“She pulled my hair.”
Mandatory reporting followed.
Daniel expected police.
He did not expect child protective services to call before he got Emma home.
The investigator, Carla Benton, sounded formal.
“Mr. Reed, we received two reports involving your household.”
Daniel frowned.
“Two?”
“One concerns your wife’s alleged conduct toward Emma.”
“Alleged?”
Carla continued:
“The second concerns concerns about medical neglect and escalating violence in your home.”
Daniel went still.
“What?”
The second report claimed:
Daniel repeatedly ignored Emma’s rehabilitation plan.
Daniel encouraged Emma to refuse exercises.
Daniel became physically aggressive when Rachel tried to enforce medical care.
Daniel struck Rachel and forcibly removed her from the home.
That report had been filed by Rachel.
Within ninety minutes of being thrown out.
Daniel stared at the wall.
“She hit my daughter.”
Carla answered:
“We investigate all allegations.”
Good procedure.
Terrible feeling.
Then she asked:
“Did you strike Rachel?”
Daniel paused.
“Yes.”
He had.
One slap.
Context mattered.

Rachel’s revenge had begun before Emma’s bruising was even documented.
