Chapter 7 - THE PHYSICAL THERAPIST

Dr. Morris requested Emma’s physical therapist, Nicole Sanders, provide records.

Nicole had seen Emma twice a week.

Her notes said:

Progress appropriate.

Pain variable.

Child anxious but cooperative.

No evidence of deliberate noncompliance.

Then one entry:

Stepmother repeatedly requests more aggressive home exercise progression despite therapist advising current protocol.

Another:

Caregiver Rachel Reed asks whether “refusal behaviors” justify residential rehab. Advised no indication at present.

Daniel stared.

“She already asked?”

Three weeks before the cane.

Nicole remembered.

Rachel kept pushing:

“What if Emma won’t cooperate?”

“What if Daniel undermines the plan?”

“What documentation would a residential program need?”

Nicole assumed Rachel was anxious.

Then Nicole produced an email.

RACHEL:

Can you amend note to reflect repeated noncompliance?

NICOLE:

That would not reflect my observation.

RACHEL:

You only see her twice a week.

NICOLE:

Then I can document caregiver report separately, not as fact.

That email mattered.

Rachel had tried to upgrade allegation into clinical record.

Nicole refused.
