Emma’s biological mother, Laura Reed, had died when Emma was four.
Not from the shoulder injury.
Years earlier.
Laura had left a trust for Emma.
Most of it was ordinary:
education,
health,
support.
But after Emma’s recent surgery, the trustee approved temporary recovery expenditures.
Home assistance.
Transportation.
Physical therapy support.
Care coordination.
Daniel remembered signing forms.
He thought they reimbursed expenses.
Rachel had handled the paperwork because Daniel was overwhelmed.
Attorney Maya Grant, the trust’s outside counsel, reviewed the records.
Then called Daniel.
“Did you hire Reed Family Recovery Coordination?”
“No.”
“It’s listed as the household care coordinator.”
“Owned by who?”
Maya paused.
“Rachel Reed.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Rachel had registered an LLC eight months earlier.
She had invoiced Emma’s trust for:
care planning,
medication supervision,
rehabilitation coordination,
family transportation,
behavioral compliance management.
Total approved over three months:
$23,400.
Daniel stared.
“She was being paid to take care of Emma?”
“Through the trust, yes.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You signed one approval.”
He remembered.
A stack of postoperative papers.
Rachel said:
“This one just lets the trust cover recovery help.”
Technically true.
Then Maya said:
“There’s another request pending.”
Daniel looked up.
Amount:
$18,750 per month.
Provider:
Harbor Ridge Pediatric Recovery Center.
Daniel had never heard of it.
Purpose:
Intensive residential rehabilitation and behavioral stabilization.
Emma.
Residential.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Why would my daughter need to live somewhere?”
Maya answered:

“According to the application, she’s becoming noncompliant and unsafe at home.”
