Chapter 5 - HARBOR RIDGE

Harbor Ridge looked legitimate.

Beautiful website.

Accredited clinicians.

Private campus outside Hartford.

It treated:

complex postoperative recovery,

pediatric pain conditions,

behavioral barriers to rehabilitation.

Not a prison.

Not inherently abusive.

That made the scheme smarter.

Then Daniel learned who ran administration.

Melissa Vaughn.

Rachel’s older sister.

Daniel had met Melissa twice at Christmas.

He had no idea she worked there.

Maya reviewed disclosures.

The family relationship was listed.

Buried on page nineteen.

Not hidden.

But Daniel had not read it.

The pending application described Emma as:

increasingly oppositional,

refusing physical therapy,

verbally aggressive toward caregiver,

manipulating father to avoid treatment,

at risk of compromising surgical outcome.

Daniel nearly threw the file.

Maya stopped him.

“Read.”

He did.

Attached:

Rachel’s recovery log.

Photos of:

untouched exercise bands,

discarded medication cup,

messy bedroom,

a broken glass.

Daniel recognized the glass.

Emma dropped it accidentally while trying to pour juice one-handed.

Rachel labeled it:

rage episode after rehabilitation demand.

Then a text from Emma to Daniel:

Dad please come home.

Rachel had attached it as:

separation anxiety and caregiver splitting.

Daniel felt sick.

Normal fear had been turned into pathology.
