Chapter 10 - THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The household dashboard included photographs of meal trays.

Sloane relied on them heavily.

Untouched oatmeal.

Full soup.

Half-eaten chicken.

Proof, she said, that Evelyn refused food.

Then Thomas Reed noticed timestamps.

Breakfast photo:

9:42 a.m.

Evelyn’s physical therapy sessions were Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 to 10:00.

Four “refused breakfast” photos were taken while she was in therapy.

Lunch:

1:18 p.m.

Two dates matched medical appointments outside the house.

Dinner:

7:50 p.m.

Evelyn normally went to bed early and had asked to eat at six.

Sloane often delayed trays.

Why?

She said staff scheduling.

Sometimes true.

Then a housekeeper explained the procedure.

Tray delivered.

If Evelyn was absent or asleep, staff waited fifteen minutes.

Then Sloane instructed them to remove it.

Photo first.

Dashboard:

refused.

No one asked:

was she there?

Then Daniel said:

“These records are not fabricated images.”

Joseph nodded.

“They’re fabricated meaning.”

Exactly.

Facts selected and labeled.

Then Evelyn remembered one night she woke hungry at 11 p.m.

She came to the kitchen.

Pantry locked.

Refrigerator mostly empty because Sloane had moved prepared food into the caterer’s refrigerator behind a coded door.

Evelyn found two sealed rolls in the trash from dinner service.

Still wrapped.

She ate one.

Sloane saw it on camera the next morning.

That was the day Sloane called her:

parasite.

The trash-bin incident happened three days later.

Not random rage.

Escalation.

Then Officer Chen asked Evelyn:

“Why didn’t you call 911?”

Evelyn looked embarrassed.

“For food?”

Laura said:

“For fear.”

Evelyn went quiet.

May you like

She had not named it fear until Joseph came home.

Sometimes abuse survives because each individual event sounds too small when separated from the system.
