Chapter 2 - THE WEIGHT SHE LOST

Joseph called emergency services.
Sloane told him he was overreacting.
He ignored her.
Evelyn was examined at the hospital.
The trash-bin impact had caused mild redness and soreness.
No fracture.
No serious visible injury.
But the doctor found something more concerning.
Weight loss.
Dehydration.
General weakness.
Nothing so severe that medicine could declare a single cause immediately.
Enough that the doctor asked:
“Has she had trouble getting food?”
Joseph looked at Evelyn.
She answered before him.
“Yes.”
Sloane was not allowed into the exam room after Evelyn said she did not want her there.
Adult Protective Services was notified because Evelyn was an older adult reporting deprivation and physical humiliation in a household where she depended partly on others.
Officer Laura Chen also took statements about the bin incident.
Joseph sat against the wall outside the room.
He had spent the last six months believing his mother’s appetite was declining.
Sloane sent him updates.
Mom barely touched breakfast.
Your mother slept through lunch.
She’s getting difficult about meals.
Joseph had replied:
Try something she likes.
Call the nutritionist.
Maybe smaller portions.
He had never once asked Evelyn directly:
Are you being fed?
Why would he?
Because the question was absurd.
Until it wasn’t.
Then the hospital dietitian reviewed Evelyn’s medical chart.
Three months earlier, her geriatrician had recommended:
small, frequent meals,
high-protein snacks,
easy access to fluids,
food available whenever she felt hungry.
Joseph stared at the note.
“That’s not what Sloane told me.”
The dietitian looked at him.
“What did she tell you?”
“That Mom was supposed to stay on three controlled meals so she wouldn’t graze.”
The dietitian shook her head.
“No.”
Joseph went cold.
Then Evelyn said:
“She locked the pantry.”
He turned.
“What?”
“She said the doctor ordered it.”
Joseph closed his eyes.
The doctor had ordered the opposite.
Then Officer Chen entered carrying a printed screenshot from the mansion’s household system.
“Mr. Calloway, who created the care protocol labeled ‘Evelyn Nutrition Compliance’?”
Joseph stared at the page.
At the bottom:

He looked up.
“I’ve never seen that document in my life.”
