Chapter 11 - THE HOUSEHOLD RESET
Joseph wanted to fire everyone.
Daniel stopped him.
“Some employees followed bad instructions. Some challenged them. Some were afraid. Find out which.”
So Joseph did something harder than rage.
He reviewed roles individually.
Thomas stayed.
Beth Warren, the house manager, admitted she suspected the protocol was wrong but never asked for medical documentation.
She received formal discipline and retraining.
Two staff left voluntarily.
Joseph changed the household structure.
No spouse-controlled information bottleneck.
Any resident of the house could contact:
medical providers,
family,
management,
outside services directly.
No food restrictions without written clinical basis.
No camera monitoring for “care compliance.”
Kitchen access remained open except ordinary safety storage.
Then Evelyn interrupted.
“I’m moving out.”
Joseph stared.
“Mom—”
She raised one hand.
“Do not turn fixing the house into another reason I have to stay in it.”
He stopped.
Good.
She moved back to her condo six weeks later after safety modifications:
grab bars,
better lighting,
weekly housekeeping,
meal delivery available if she wanted it.
Joseph offered a live-in aide.
Evelyn said no.
He offered daily nurse visits.
No.
She accepted:
physical therapy twice a week,
grocery delivery,
a check-in call every evening.
Her choices.
Then Joseph gave her a key to his house.
Evelyn laughed.
“I already had one.”
He looked confused.
She held it up.
Sloane had never taken the house key.
Only the food key.
