Chapter 13 - THE DIVORCE
Joseph filed for divorce.
Not because his mother demanded it.
Evelyn never did.
She told him:
“Your marriage is your decision.”
Joseph answered:
“It should have been yours too.”
Meaning:
her choice about whether she felt safe around Sloane.
He had ignored that.
The divorce was financially complex because Joseph was a billionaire.
But not a revenge fantasy.
Prenuptial agreement.
Marital assets.
Property allocations.
Support issues.
Lawyers.
Time.
The Winnetka mansion remained with Joseph under the agreement.
Sloane retained substantial assets of her own.
She did not become homeless.
No poetic poverty.
Then Sloane asked once through mediation:
“Do you think your mother won?”
Joseph stared.
“There shouldn’t have been a competition.”
That was the real failure.
Sloane had experienced Evelyn’s presence as invasion.
Joseph had treated two women’s conflict as something they should “work out.”
Instead of recognizing one person was dependent and the other controlled the household.
Then Sloane said:
“I asked you to move her.”
“I know.”
“You ignored me.”
“Yes.”
That mattered too.
Joseph had not caused abuse.
But he had refused the underlying conflict.
He kept saying:
just another month.
after this trip.
when Mom is stronger.
when work slows down.
Delay created a vacuum.
Sloane filled it with control.
Then Joseph said:
“I should have made a plan with both of you.”
Sloane laughed bitterly.
“Would that have changed me?”
He looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
