Chapter 4 - THE LOCKED PANTRY

Evelyn had moved into the Winnetka mansion after a winter fall.

Not dramatic.

She slipped on ice outside her condo.

No broken hip.

But a painful pelvic bruise and several weeks of limited mobility.

Joseph insisted she recover at his house.

“Just until spring.”

Evelyn resisted.

Then agreed.

The mansion had:

an elevator,

heated floors,

wide hallways,

a first-floor bedroom suite.

At first, it was comfortable.

Sloane arranged flowers.

Bought Evelyn soft slippers.

Hired a physical therapist.

Then spring came.

Evelyn was still weak.

Joseph traveled constantly.

Sloane began saying:

“Maybe stay through summer.”

Not out of kindness alone.

She wanted Evelyn fully recovered before moving.

At least that was what Joseph believed.

Then small rules appeared.

Don’t use the stairs alone.

Reasonable.

Don’t cook without someone nearby.

Reasonable for a while.

Then:

Don’t make coffee after eight.

Don’t order food without telling Sloane.

Don’t ask staff directly.

Don’t go into the pantry.

Evelyn protested.

Sloane answered:

“You’re a guest.”

That word changed everything.

Then one afternoon Evelyn found the pantry door fitted with a keypad.

She asked Beth Warren why.

Beth said:

“Mrs. Calloway said it was for inventory control.”

Evelyn laughed.

Then found the refrigerator’s lower snack drawer empty.

Fruit bowls disappeared.

Protein bars moved into Sloane’s private office.

The kitchen became enormous and useless.

A room full of food Evelyn needed permission to touch.

Then Daniel reviewed smart-home logs.

The pantry code changed three times.

Every time after a staff member shared it with Evelyn.

Joseph stared.

“Why would she do that?”

Evelyn answered:

“Because I kept eating.”

Silence.

Then she explained Sloane’s phrase.

“If you keep proving you can’t follow simple rules, Joseph will finally understand you need somewhere safer.”

Joseph turned.

“What somewhere?”

Evelyn looked away.

An hour later Daniel found the answer in Sloane’s calendar.

LAKEVIEW RESIDENCE — PRIVATE ASSESSMENT.

A luxury assisted-living facility.

Appointment scheduled for next Thursday.

May you like

For Evelyn.

Joseph had never been told.
