Chapter 8 - THE STAFF WHO LEFT
Three employees had left the mansion in five months.
Joseph had barely noticed.
He saw payroll summaries.
Names changed.
Sloane said:
schedule conflict,
poor fit,
family issue.
Then Daniel contacted them.
First:
Amy Doyle, weekend cook.
She resigned after Sloane reprimanded her for giving Evelyn a turkey sandwich at 3 p.m.
Amy said:
“Mrs. Evelyn was shaking.”
“Did you tell anyone?”
“I told Sloane.”
“What happened?”
“She said I was undermining care.”
Then Sloane reduced Amy’s weekend hours.
Amy quit.
Second:
Karen Wells, housekeeper.
She helped Evelyn order soup from a local café.
Sloane found the delivery bag.
Karen was fired for “violating household security protocols.”
Third:
Ben Walsh, night porter.
He called Joseph’s office directly after seeing Evelyn search the trash for a sealed yogurt cup.
Joseph never received the call.
His executive assistant routed home matters to Sloane because that was the standing instruction.
Ben was told the situation had been handled.
Two weeks later he resigned.
Joseph stared at the phone-routing policy.
Authorized by:
Joseph Calloway.
This one was real.
He had approved it three years earlier because household maintenance calls interrupted investor meetings.
“All home matters go through Sloane unless emergency.”
At the time it meant:
leaks,
vendors,
staff scheduling.
Over time it came to include:
his mother.
Then Joseph said:
“I built the gate.”
Daniel nodded.
“Sloane used it.”
Both could be true.
Then Ben provided one final detail.
The night he saw Evelyn searching the trash, he offered food.
She refused at first.
Why?
“She said Sloane would check the cameras.”
Joseph closed his eyes.
His mother had become afraid to accept a yogurt in his kitchen.
