Chapter 15 - WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

One year later, Buddy ran normally.

No limp.

No fear of sidewalks.

Mostly.

Emily still tightened the leash when Margaret’s garage door opened.

Habit.

The HOA published its annual financial report.

Security costs were down.

Reporting improved.

A new conflict-of-interest policy required:

vendor relationship disclosures,

family-business disclosures,

board recusal.

Emily had helped draft the spreadsheet template.

Nothing more.

She had declined a board seat.

People assumed she wanted power.

She did not.

She wanted clean numbers.

One bright afternoon, Buddy stopped near the same patch of grass where Margaret had kicked him.

He sniffed.

Then looked up at Emily.

No memory visible.

Just dog.

Margaret stepped out of her house.

Beige cardigan again.

Older.

Quieter.

She saw Buddy.

Stopped.

Emily reached for her phone automatically.

Margaret noticed.

For a second, the old expression returned.

“What are you doing?”

Same question as that day.

A year earlier, Emily had been too angry to answer.

Now she looked at the phone.

Then at Margaret.

“Nothing.”

Margaret frowned.

Emily put the phone back in her pocket.

Buddy moved closer to her leg.

Emily continued walking.

She did not need to record every second anymore.

She had learned something better than revenge.

Documentation mattered.

Boundaries mattered.

Process mattered.

And sometimes the most powerful answer to someone who expects you to keep fighting forever is to make sure the system no longer depends on your fight.

Behind her, Margaret said nothing.

Buddy trotted beside Emily.

Same sidewalk.

Different balance.

The camera above the garage still worked.

May you like

It just wasn’t the only thing protecting them anymore.

THE END
