Chapter 10 - LILY IS NOT A WITNESS
Both sides’ attorneys agreed on one thing.
Lily would not be interrogated about milk boxes.
She was five.
She had seen:
Travis,
deliveries,
Mommy moving papers,
maybe jewelry.
That did not make her evidence warehouse.
A child specialist spoke with Lily only to assess safety and parenting stress.
Lily said:
“Daddy was loud.”
Then:
“Mommy cried.”
Then:
“Travis gives good chocolate milk.”
The specialist asked:
“Do you feel safe with Daddy?”
Lily thought.
“When he’s not mad.”
Marcus read that sentence later.
It broke him.
He entered anger-management treatment voluntarily before any court ordered it.
Not because he wanted custody advantage.
Though it would help.
Because his daughter had just described safety as conditional on his mood.
Madison began individual therapy too.
Her pattern:
secrecy,
contingency planning,
May you like
testing people instead of confronting them.
Neither adult got to call themselves healthy because the other had failed differently.
