Chapter 8 - PETER LAWSON

Nicole’s preliminary review found a pattern.

Ridgeline paid:

consulting retainers,

project closeout fees,

vendor advances.

Several recipients appeared legitimate.

Three did not.

East Hollow Advisory.

Grant Mercer Services.

NCP Logistics.

All shared:

mail drops,

thin websites,

recent formation.

Total paid:

$1.16 million.

Beneficial ownership records eventually linked two entities to relatives of Peter Lawson.

The third linked to a longtime associate.

Marcus went cold.

Peter denied theft.

He argued the entities performed real work:

claims consulting,

vendor negotiation,

expediting.

Some invoices supported services.

But fees were inflated.

Then Nicole found duplicate billing.

Same deliverable.

Two entities.

Two invoices.

Marcus confronted Peter with counsel present.

Peter smiled sadly.

“You knew Ridgeline was dirty.”

Marcus snapped:

“I knew it was opaque.”

“You created opaque.”

There.

Peter’s defense.

Marcus had built the room.

Peter had hidden inside it.

Then Peter said:

“You wanted the trust buyout done. You told me keep it clean until closing.”

Marcus stared.

“Clean meant controlled.”

“To me it meant invisible.”

Not a legal defense.

But a devastating governance indictment.

Madison’s secret evidence route had found something real.
