Nine months after Lily’s sentence in the car, Marcus and Madison made a decision.
Divorce.
Not because Travis won.
He did not.
Not because Peter destroyed them.
He did not.
Because reconciliation required a version of trust neither could honestly promise.
Marcus said:
“I can forgive you for the documents.”
Madison nodded.
“I can forgive you for not telling me about the company review.”
Then silence.
Marcus continued:
“I don’t know if you can forgive me for hitting you.”
Madison answered:
“I don’t know either.”
Good.
No forced absolution.
Then she said:
“And I don’t know if you can ever stop wondering whether I’m hiding an exit.”
Marcus looked down.
Also true.
They negotiated carefully.
House sold.
Joint assets divided.
Madison’s premarital jewelry stayed hers.
The $38,000 held in attorney trust was accounted for and divided according to marital-property rules.
No secret jackpot.
Lily got a parenting plan.
Marcus stayed in treatment.
Madison agreed not to use Travis as a childcare intermediary for the transition period.
