Chapter 6 - THE POLICE REPORT
Madison called the police the morning after Marcus struck her.
Not as revenge.
Not entirely.
She documented:
two slaps,
fear,
Lily being present for part of the confrontation.
Marcus did not deny it.
When officers arrived, he said:
“I hit my wife twice.”
The officer asked:
“Did she hit you?”
“No.”
“Threaten you?”
“No.”
“Were you protecting your daughter from immediate harm?”
Marcus hesitated.
Madison had grabbed Lily’s arm.
But the second slap came after Marcus removed that hand.
“No.”
That answer mattered.
He was not arrested automatically under every imagined rule of television.
But a domestic violence report existed.
Madison left with Lily for her sister’s home that afternoon.
Marcus hated it.
Then understood.
He had made the house unsafe.
Attorney Rachel Sloan advised him:
“Do not contact Madison directly except about Lily through counsel until temporary arrangements are clear.”
Marcus stared.
“She’s my wife.”
Rachel answered:
“And you hit her.”
No sympathy.
Good.
Then Rachel asked:
“What is she holding on Reed Development?”
Marcus told her.
Rachel’s expression changed.
“So we have a domestic case and a corporate evidence issue.”
Marcus nodded.
“And your wife’s ex-boyfriend has been transporting copied records.”
“Yes.”
Rachel leaned back.
“You understand how terrible this sounds for everyone?”
