Marcus thought that should vindicate Madison.
Then Allison disclosed something else.
Madison had moved more than documents through the milk vans.
Jewelry.
Cash.
A safe-deposit key.
Marcus stared.
“How much?”
Madison answered:
“Thirty-eight thousand dollars in cash.”
“Whose?”
“Ours.”
“You took marital cash out of the house?”
“I moved it to my lawyer’s trust account.”
“Why?”
“In case you froze me out.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“I never threatened that.”
“You control every major account.”
True.
Then jewelry.
Most belonged to Madison before marriage.
Some were gifts during marriage.
She removed them to a bank box.
Likely defensible preservation.
Then the key.
It opened a safe-deposit box Marcus did not know existed.
Inside:
copies of financial records,
Madison’s passport,
Lily’s passport,
birth certificate,
and emergency cash.
Marcus stared.
“You were planning to leave.”
Madison answered:
“I was planning to be able to.”
Different.
That line stayed with him.
She had not booked flights.
Had not transferred Lily’s trust.
Had not filed relocation papers.
She created an exit option.
Was that betrayal?
Yes.
Was it understandable?
