Chapter 11 - THE LETTER DANIEL NEVER SENT

Daniel mailed Emily one final envelope before leaving the state for work.

Inside was a letter he wrote five years earlier but never sent.

Date:

two days after Emily told him she was pregnant.

It said:

I know the baby isn’t mine because we didn’t cross that line. But I also know part of me wants uncertainty because it keeps me attached to you.

Emily stopped breathing.

Daniel had understood himself better than everyone.

Then:

Do not use me as the secret place you keep the part of yourself that doubts your marriage. It will hurt all three of us.

Emily cried.

She had done exactly that.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

She kept Daniel alive as an alternate life.

A fantasy.

Then:

If you choose Ryan, choose him without keeping me nearby as proof you could have chosen differently.

Emily put the letter down.

That was her accountability.

Ryan’s violence did not erase her betrayal.

Her betrayal did not excuse his violence.

Both needed separate names.

Then she gave the letter to Ryan.

Not to hurt him.

Because hiding more would repeat the problem.

He read.

Then said:

“He was right.”

Emily stared.

Ryan continued:

“You kept him as an exit sign.”

She looked down.

“Yes.”

“And I kept checking whether you were leaving instead of asking why you stayed.”

Yes.

They sat across from each other in a therapist’s office.

First joint session.

No promises.

Then Ryan said:

“I don’t want to know if you loved him more anymore.”

Emily looked up.

“Why?”

“Because there is no answer that can make me safe.”

That was progress.

Then Emily said:

“I don’t want you to believe me because a lab says Noah is yours.”

Ryan nodded.

“I know.”

She continued:

“I need you to believe my words enough that doubt doesn’t become punishment.”

He looked away.

“That will take time.”

“Yes.”

May you like

Good.

No miracle.
