Chapter 2 - THE NIGHT EMILY SAW DANIEL AGAIN

Ryan did not shout immediately.

That was worse.

He sat.

Looked at the photograph.

Then at Emily.

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

“Noah is five.”

“Yes.”

His jaw tightened.

“How close?”

Emily closed her eyes.

Too close.

Three months after she married Ryan, Daniel returned to town.

His father had died.

Emily learned through a mutual friend.

She went to the funeral.

Did not tell Ryan.

That was the first betrayal.

Not sex.

Secrecy.

Daniel saw her outside the church.

They talked in a parking lot for forty minutes.

Then one coffee became another meeting.

Then one night in Daniel’s apartment.

Emily remembered standing by the door.

Daniel touching her cheek.

“I’ll always love you.”

She cried.

They hugged.

Too long.

Desperate.

Then Emily left.

That was what Ryan did not know.

He stared at her now.

“Did you sleep with him?”

Emily’s throat closed.

“No.”

Ryan laughed.

“Convenient.”

“I didn’t.”

“You hid the meetings.”

“Yes.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You expect me to believe the one part that saves you?”

Emily had no answer.

That was the problem with partial truth.

It poisoned the true parts too.

Ryan stood.

“When did you get pregnant?”

“About six weeks later.”

He looked at the fertility report.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at her.

“Jesus Christ.”

Emily said:

“The doctor said low count. Not sterile.”

Ryan slammed his fist into the table.

Noah’s plastic cup jumped.

Emily flinched.

Ryan saw.

For a second, shame entered his face.

Then jealousy covered it.

“You knew this report existed?”

“Yes.”

“And never told me?”

“You were already scared.”

“Of what?”

“Not being able to have kids.”

“So you let me believe Noah proved the doctor wrong.”

Emily whispered:

“I believed he did.”

Ryan stared.

“Believed?”

There.

Wrong word.

Emily tried to fix it.

“I mean—”

“No. Say it again.”

“I believed he was yours.”

Ryan’s face changed.

Not yours.

Not ours.

Yours.

The language of doubt had begun.

Then Ryan asked:

“Did Daniel know you were pregnant?”

Emily said nothing.

He stood straighter.

“Emily.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I told him.”

Ryan laughed, but there was no humor.

“You told your ex before me?”

“No. After you.”

“That’s supposed to help?”

Daniel had called because Emily disappeared.

She told him:

I’m pregnant.

I’m staying with Ryan.

Do not contact me again.

Daniel asked one question.

“Is it mine?”

Emily said no.

Because she believed no.

Because she wanted no.

Because she was terrified that even the question would destroy everything.

Ryan heard the story and saw only one thing.

Daniel had wondered.

That meant Daniel had reason.

Then Ryan said:

“I want a DNA test.”

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

He stared.

“Excuse me?”

“Not tonight. Not while you’re like this.”

“He’s my son or he’s not.”

“He’s five.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No. It’s the answer you’re forgetting.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

Then:

“If you refuse, I’ll know.”

Emily stepped closer.

“No. If I refuse tonight, you’ll know I’m protecting Noah from becoming a lab result in the middle of your rage.”

Ryan said nothing.

Then he pointed toward the door.

“Sleep somewhere else.”

Emily looked at him.

“This is my house too.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Of course you remember that now.”

She went to the guest room.

At 2:13 a.m., her phone lit up.

Unknown number.

One message:

RYAN CALLED ME.

Emily froze.

May you like

Then another.

IT’S DANIEL.
