Chapter 6 - THE ENVELOPE THAT DISAPPEARED

The lab result was mailed as well as uploaded to a secure portal.

Ryan had requested both.

The portal failed.

Temporary account lock due repeated login attempts.

Then the physical envelope disappeared from the mailbox.

Emily laughed from stress.

“You have got to be kidding.”

Ryan did not.

He installed a camera.

Too late.

Who would steal it?

Daniel?

No motive.

If he was not father, result cleared him.

Claire?

No.

Emily?

Ryan looked at her.

She saw.

“You think I took it.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You looked it.”

He did not deny.

That became another fight.

Then a neighbor’s camera showed a woman approaching the mailbox.

Patricia’s younger sister.

Aunt Diane.

Emily stared.

“Why?”

Diane had learned about the test from Claire.

She admitted taking the envelope.

Why?

“I didn’t want your marriage destroyed over something your mother already solved.”

Emily nearly screamed.

“You stole a legal lab result?”

“I was going to burn it.”

Ryan looked physically ill.

“Did you open it?”

“No.”

Police recovered the envelope from Diane’s car before she destroyed it.

Still sealed.

Everyone stared.

Ryan opened it.

Inside:

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 0.00%.

Emily stopped breathing.

Ryan’s face went white.

Then he realized.

The report listed alleged father:

DANIEL REED.

It was Daniel’s comparison report.

Not Ryan’s.

Daniel excluded.

Noah was not Daniel’s son.

Emily cried with relief.

Ryan did not.

Because his own report was still separate.

The lab had mailed two.

The second remained missing.

Then Emily said:

“This should matter.”

Ryan looked at her.

“It matters that he isn’t Daniel’s.”

“Exactly.”

“But it doesn’t prove he’s mine.”

Emily stared.

That was true.

And unbearable.

Then Diane confessed Patricia had once told her the old secret test result.

“What did she say?”

Diane hesitated.

“That Ryan was the father.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

“Why of course?”

“Because every dead relative suddenly remembers exactly what saves Emily.”

Diane slapped the table.

“I am not lying.”

The family turned on each other.

Then Claire found the old lab name from Patricia’s invoice.

Private Lab Services had been acquired by a national diagnostics company.

Archived records might exist.

Request submitted.

Processing time:

ten business days.

Ryan could not tolerate ten days.

Then the lab called.

His current result was ready digitally after identity verification.

He sat at the computer.

Emily beside him.

Noah asleep upstairs.

Ryan clicked.

Page loaded.

Then froze.

Server error.

Ryan laughed.

Emily started crying.

May you like

Not because of technology.

Because their marriage had become one endless moment before an answer.
