Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH RYAN HID FOR ONE NIGHT

Ryan sat in the garage for forty minutes.

Then one hour.

Emily called Claire.

Then Daniel.

Then almost police.

Ryan finally opened the door.

His face looked destroyed.

Emily pushed past him.

Laptop open on the workbench.

She read.

99.9998%.

Her knees nearly gave out.

Ryan caught her.

She shoved him away.

“No.”

He stepped back.

Emily read again.

Father:

Ryan Carter.

Noah’s biological father.

No ambiguity.

No Daniel.

No mystery.

Ryan whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Emily turned.

The calm in her face frightened him.

“You hit me.”

“Yes.”

“You screamed at me in front of him.”

“Yes.”

“You looked at Noah like he was somebody else’s child.”

Ryan started crying.

“Yes.”

“And you knew the doctor had told you conception was possible.”

“Yes.”

Emily stared.

Then:

“You wanted me guilty.”

Ryan flinched.

“No.”

“You did.”

“I wanted the truth.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You wanted a truth that explained your jealousy.”

He had no defense.

Then Noah opened the garage door from the house.

He had woken.

“Mom?”

Emily wiped her face instantly.

Ryan did too.

Noah looked between them.

“Are you mad?”

Emily knelt.

“At Daddy?”

Noah nodded.

“Yes.”

Ryan’s face broke.

Emily continued:

“But not at you.”

Noah asked:

“Am I in trouble?”

“No.”

“Did I do something?”

“No.”

Ryan knelt too, farther away.

“Noah, none of this is because of you.”

Noah looked at him.

“Are you my daddy?”

Silence.

The question stabbed everyone.

Why would a five-year-old ask that?

Because children hear more than adults think.

Ryan answered:

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

“Yes. I’m your dad.”

Noah stared.

Then hugged him.

Ryan cried into his son’s shoulder.

Emily watched.

The truth did not heal anything.

It only stopped one kind of damage from spreading.

Then she packed a bag.

Not secretly this time.

Ryan watched.

“Where are you going?”

“Claire’s.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

“Emily.”

She turned.

“You got your answer.”

Then:

“Now I need mine.”

“What answer?”

“Whether I can stay married to a man who needed DNA to remember who his son was.”

May you like

Ryan said nothing.

Emily left.
