Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE THEY DIDN'T SELL
They decided not to sell the house.
Not because reunion was guaranteed.
Because the market was bad and Noah liked his school.
Practicality.
Ryan kept his apartment.
Emily moved back into the house with Noah.
The bedroom door was replaced.
Not symbolically.
The old frame cracked from the slam.
Still.
Emily chose the new door.
Ryan paid.
No argument.
Then co-parenting became routine.
Wednesday dinner.
Saturday morning.
School pickups.
Ryan never entered without knocking.
One night Noah forgot his backpack at Ryan’s apartment.
Ryan brought it over.
Stood outside.
Emily opened the door.
Rain.
He looked tired.
“Can I come in for five minutes?”
Emily thought.
“Yes.”
He entered.
No tension explosion.
No demand.
They sat at the kitchen table.
Then Ryan said:
“I’m still jealous sometimes.”
Emily looked at him.
“Of Daniel?”
“Of the version of you who almost left with him.”
She nodded.
“What do you do with it?”
“Tell my therapist.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Then:
“And sometimes I write it down and don’t send it to you.”
“Excellent.”
He laughed.
Then Emily said:
“I still get scared when you raise your voice.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“I know.”
“No. I need you to hear that without trying to fix it.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
There.
Not every wound needed an answer.
Then Noah came downstairs.
“Daddy?”
Ryan smiled.
“Hey.”
Noah climbed into his lap.
No hesitation now.
No DNA question.
That part had settled.
Then Noah said:
“Mommy says you’re sleeping at your apartment forever.”
Emily looked at him.
“I did not say forever.”
Ryan almost laughed.
Noah asked:
“Are you married?”
Silence.
Emily answered:
“Yes.”
Ryan looked at her.
Technically still true.
They had never filed.
Then Noah asked:
“Do married people live apart?”
Emily said:
“Sometimes.”
That was enough for five.
Then later Ryan asked:
“Why haven’t you filed?”
Emily looked at him.
“Because I don’t know yet.”
He nodded.
