Chapter 4 - THE TEST EMILY NEVER KNEW EXISTED

Emily’s mother, Patricia, had never trusted Ryan.

Not because he was violent then.

He wasn’t.

Because he was jealous.

Possessive in smaller ways.

Questions about who texted.

Comments about old photographs.

A habit of needing reassurance that eventually became exhausting.

Patricia worried marriage would not survive a paternity doubt if Ryan ever learned about Daniel.

So after Noah was born, she took a shortcut.

She collected one of Ryan’s discarded razors.

A newborn cheek swab from a “family ancestry kit” she told Emily was for genealogy.

Sent both to a private lab.

Without consent.

Claire knew because Patricia asked her to mail the package.

Emily stared at her sister.

“You let her?”

“I was twenty-four.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I thought she was protecting you.”

The family anthem.

Protecting.

Then Emily asked:

“What did it say?”

Claire looked miserable.

“I never saw the result.”

“Mom?”

“Mom died two years later.”

“Where are her papers?”

“Storage.”

Ryan heard enough to walk in.

“What result?”

Emily turned.

There was no point hiding this now.

She told him.

His face went blank.

“You mean there might already be a DNA test?”

“Yes.”

“Done behind my back?”

“Yes.”

Ryan laughed once.

“Your family is unbelievable.”

Emily almost said:

look who’s talking.

Did not.

Because he was right.

Then they searched Patricia’s storage unit.

Boxes.

Tax returns.

Family photographs.

Old medical files.

No test.

Then one envelope.

Private Lab Services.

Empty.

Inside only an invoice.

PATERNITY ANALYSIS — PAID.

Date:

five years earlier.

Ryan sat down on a storage box.

Emily stared.

Somewhere, once, there had been an answer.

Then Claire found Patricia’s handwritten notebook.

One line:

R. IS FATHER. THANK GOD.

Emily stopped breathing.

Ryan read it.

His face did not change.

Not relief.

Suspicion.

“That could mean anything.”

Emily stared.

“What?”

“R could be Ryan.”

“Yes.”

“Or result.”

Claire said:

“Come on.”

Ryan snapped:

“You want me to trust a dead woman’s initial after everybody lied to me?”

Emily felt hope collapse.

Then he added:

“If she already knew, why hide it?”

That was a fair question.

Why did Patricia never tell Emily?

Maybe because she thought the question itself would poison the marriage.

Maybe she destroyed the report.

Maybe the notebook was enough for her.

Or maybe “R. is father” meant something else.

Ryan’s doubt survived.

Then Daniel called Emily.

Ryan saw the screen.

“Answer.”

“No.”

“Answer.”

She did.

Speaker.

Daniel said:

“I found something.”

Ryan leaned closer.

Daniel continued:

“An old letter you gave me.”

Emily’s stomach dropped.

She remembered.

A letter written the night she left Daniel.

Never meant to be evidence.

Daniel read one line:

If I ever have a son, part of me will always wonder what he would’ve been like if he were yours.

Ryan’s face collapsed.

Emily whispered:

“That was before Noah.”

Daniel said:

“I know.”

Too late.

Ryan heard only the sentence.

Then he looked at Emily.

“Now tell me I’m crazy.”
