Chapter 5 - THE TEST RYAN ORDERED HIMSELF

Ryan filed for a private legal paternity test.

Not custody litigation.

Not yet.

A court-admissible test through a certified lab.

Emily agreed on one condition.

Noah would not be told why.

The technician said:

“Medical sample.”

That was true enough.

Noah laughed when the cheek swab tickled.

Ryan almost cried.

Emily watched him.

For three days, the house became unbearable.

Ryan slept in the basement guest room.

Emily slept upstairs.

Noah moved between them like a diplomat who did not know there was a war.

Then the lab called.

Insufficient sample.

Ryan stared at the phone.

“What does that mean?”

The swab from Ryan had contamination.

Retest required.

He laughed like the universe was mocking him.

Emily almost did too.

Then anger returned.

“Maybe stop treating uncertainty like proof.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Maybe stop giving me reasons.”

There.

Both still fighting.

Then Daniel came back into town.

He had avoided it.

Now he wanted to talk in person.

Emily refused.

Ryan agreed for her.

That alone caused another fight.

“You don’t schedule meetings with my ex.”

“He’s part of this.”

“He is because you keep dragging him into it.”

“I didn’t kiss him while married.”

Emily went silent.

Noah was upstairs.

Good.

Ryan continued:

“You keep acting like I invented the question.”

“You turned it into violence.”

His face changed.

There.

The slap.

The shove.

He had not apologized properly.

Not yet.

He looked away.

Emily said:

“You can be hurt and still be wrong.”

Ryan whispered:

“I know.”

First crack.

Then:

“I’m sorry I hit you.”

Emily waited.

He continued:

“There is no excuse.”

Good.

Then he said:

“But I still need to know.”

She nodded.

“Then know.”

Retest scheduled.

This time Daniel asked:

“Do you want my sample too?”

Ryan said yes before Emily could.

That was irrational medically—if Ryan is father, Daniel is irrelevant.

But emotionally, Ryan wanted the triangle closed.

Daniel agreed.

Three samples.

Ryan.

Daniel.

Noah.

The lab warned:

paternity can be established directly; comparative analysis unnecessary.

Ryan insisted.

Then Daniel and Emily saw each other at the lab corridor.

Years collapsed for one second.

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Hi.”

Emily whispered:

“Hi.”

Ryan watched.

Every microexpression became evidence.

Daniel saw.

Then he said:

“You know I never slept with her.”

Ryan answered:

“I know what both of you say.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

Then:

“I should’ve stayed away after the wedding.”

“Yes,” Emily said.

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

Then Daniel added:

“But Noah isn’t mine.”

Ryan stared.

“How do you know?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because I never slept with your wife.”

Simple.

Ryan had no answer.

Then the second test went to processing.

And someone broke into the Carter mailbox that night.
