Chapter 10 - THE CHILD WHO LEFT PROTECTION
Mia’s departure triggered an Amber Alert, but the case did not fit a simple abduction. She had left voluntarily after receiving a message on the advocate’s tablet.
The message appeared to come from Grace: Carter has me. Lucas marries at noon. Bring the blue file to the church and tell him before the vows.
The advocate knew of no blue file.
Mia did.
Isabel had sewn a waterproof envelope into the lining of Mia’s childhood coat. Grace kept the coat in secure storage and told Mia never to mention it. Investigators found the storage locker open and the coat cut apart.
The envelope was gone.
Naomi traced Mia across bus cameras. She avoided police because the message warned that Carter controlled uniforms. At nine years old, she was navigating a city alone using a plan built from years of fear.
Lucas wanted every officer focused on finding her. Mia’s advocate cautioned against turning the search into a chase that might drive her underground.
“She needs one safe destination,” the advocate said. “The church is the only place she thinks she can reach you publicly.”
They kept the wedding schedule.
Valeria asked whether Mia might be carrying evidence Carter wanted badly enough to create the message.
Priya believed so. The blue file probably contained Isabel’s original trust records and proof that Carter falsified Mia’s death.
At dawn, a flower vendor near the church saw a girl matching Mia’s description behind a loading truck. Before police arrived, she was gone.
