Chapter 12 - THE BRIDE’S SECOND CONFESSION
Valeria gave Priya her private phone.
Deleted messages showed she had communicated with Carter far more than admitted. He coached her through Lucas’s grief, preferences, and vulnerabilities before their first date.
Their meeting had not been accidental.
Carter placed Valeria on the board of a museum Lucas supported, expecting proximity to produce a relationship. Valeria knew Carter wanted access to Lucas but claimed she fell genuinely in love afterward.
“At what point did you stop being part of his plan?” Lucas asked.
“I don’t know.”
It was the most honest answer she had given.
She had also signed a confidentiality letter promising to notify Carter of any reference to Elena, Mia, or Isabel’s sealed files. In exchange, he kept her juvenile history private and paid her mother’s debts.
Lucas ended their engagement privately.
The public wedding remained scheduled to protect the operation, but no marriage would occur.
Valeria removed the ring. “Do you want another bride for the performance?”
“There is no performance of vows. We are bringing Carter to a public legal acknowledgment, not staging love.”
Valeria agreed to walk to the church doors because Carter expected her there. She would cooperate with prosecutors and accept whatever charges followed.
Her attorney warned that full confession could expose her to conspiracy liability.
“Then we stop calling fear an excuse,” Valeria said.
That evening, she received a photograph of Grace bound to a chair. The image included no visible injury. A message followed:
Deliver the child and file. Wear the dress. Smile.

Valeria deleted the image before showing Lucas.
Then she restored it from recently deleted files and confessed what she had almost done.
