Chapter 25 - THE CEREMONY CARTER WROTE
Priya read Isabel’s revocation aloud only after Mia consented and the court monitor approved the public portion.
It removed Carter from every Moreno trust role and documented Elena’s living status. It preserved Mia’s beneficiary rights and barred any spouse acknowledgment from extinguishing them.
The revocation did not automatically give Lucas control. Because he had nearly married without knowing Elena existed, an independent fiduciary would supervise disputed assets until a court determined what he reasonably should have known.
Lucas accepted that limit.
Carter argued Isabel lacked capacity when she signed. Two witnesses and medical records contradicted him, but the claim required trial rather than instant resolution.
Valeria gave her cooperation statement before guests who had arrived expecting vows.
She admitted Carter arranged her proximity to Lucas, paid her mother’s debts, hid Valeria Rose’s deposition, and pressured her to report Mia. She also admitted she continued lying after learning the child was real.
“I loved Lucas,” she said. “Love did not make the way I entered his life honest.”
Lucas removed the wedding ring from his pocket.
He did not throw it dramatically. It was evidence of a relationship that had contained tenderness and manipulation at once. He placed it in Valeria’s open palm.
“There will be no marriage today.”
Valeria closed her fingers around it and nodded.
Carter attempted to leave. Federal agents served him with warrants for trust fraud, forged court process, obstruction, witness intimidation, and unlawful medical control. They did not charge him with kidnapping Grace or causing the Moreno plane crash because evidence did not support those claims.
The distinction did not make the arrest less consequential.
As agents escorted him away, Carter looked at Mia.
“Do you think these people want you now?” he asked. “They want what your name unlocks.”
Mia flinched.
Lucas did not answer for her.
Her advocate did.

The church bells began ringing for a wedding that would not happen.
