Chapter 3 - THE GIRL IN THE CLINIC RECORD
Priya petitioned to unseal the guardianship file. Carter opposed, citing the privacy of a deceased child and unrelated family.
The judge released only a medical index.
Mia Marie Moreno had received treatment at a foundation clinic from birth until age two. Her mother was listed as Elena Moreno. The father’s name was withheld.
Lucas had an older half-sister named Elena.
His father’s first marriage had been erased from every family biography. Elena was sixteen years older than Lucas and disappeared after accusing Moreno executives of falsifying pediatric-drug trial consent forms. Public records said she died in a boating accident. No body was recovered.
Mia was her daughter.
Isabel secretly became the child’s guardian after Elena vanished. Two years later, Isabel and Lucas’s father died when their private plane crashed. Carter then reported Mia dead and closed the guardianship.
“Why would my mother hide my niece from me?” Lucas asked.
Priya found the answer in sealed protective filings. Isabel believed someone inside the trust was searching for the child because Elena had made Mia a contingent beneficiary.
If Lucas died without a legally recognized child, Elena’s line inherited forty percent of the trust.
If Lucas married, his spouse could approve a declaration that Elena’s line was extinct.
The wedding was not merely romantic or financial. It could permanently erase Mia’s claim.
Lucas confronted Valeria. She went pale when he showed her the photograph.
“I’ve never seen that girl,” she said.
