Chapter 17 - THE GIRL BENEATH THE CHURCH

Police searched the basement without sirens or shouted commands. They found food wrappers, a dirty blanket, and the second half of the blue-file page.
Mia was gone.
On the wall, she had drawn the church entrance and marked three adults: Lucas, Valeria, and Carter. A red line connected Carter to the security guard.
Mia understood the conflicting command structure better than some adults.
A hidden passage from the basement led to a neighboring community center. A volunteer saw her leave and offered help. Mia ran when the woman mentioned police.
Lucas recorded another message. This time he did not ask Mia to come to him.
“Find any uniformed city officer and say you need your advocate, Dana Wells. You do not need to bring me the file. You do not need to stop the wedding. Adults will stop it.”
Mia’s advocate approved the wording.
An hour later, Dana received a voicemail from Mia.
“I heard Lucas. But Mr. Carter has Grace, and adults keep saying documents matter more when the right person sees them.”
She was repeating lessons learned from the people protecting her.
Dana answered through the emergency line: “You matter without the documents. Grace would say the same.”
No reply came.
Naomi traced the call to a pay phone two blocks from the church. A street vendor remembered Mia asking when wedding guests would arrive.

“She said she needed enough people watching,” he reported.
The ceremony was now less than eighteen hours away.
