Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO SIGNED FOR THE DEAD
Priya reconstructed Carter’s role across three decades.
He began as counsel to Lucas’s father, Rafael Moreno. When Elena exposed falsified drug-trial consents, Carter negotiated settlements and sealed records. Rafael believed he was protecting the company from an overzealous daughter. Carter used the secrecy to create personal control over liability funds.
After Elena’s injury, he became her medical proxy through a forged document. He then diverted money from her care trust to law firms and shell consultants.
Isabel discovered the diversion and secretly preserved Mia’s beneficiary rights. Her plane crashed before she could remove Carter.
The aviation investigation found maintenance negligence but no sabotage. Carter had recommended the contractor, yet no evidence showed he caused the crash.
That distinction mattered. He exploited deaths; the story could not honestly accuse him of every death surrounding him.
Carter’s provable crimes were already severe: forged judicial orders, trust theft, witness intimidation, medical-proxy fraud, and concealment of a living beneficiary.
The wedding created one final opportunity. Once Valeria signed the spouse acknowledgment, Carter intended to file a declaration that Elena and Mia were deceased or legally barred. He would then transfer disputed assets into a marital management trust he controlled.
Valeria’s signature alone would not make the fraud lawful. It would give him plausible reliance on a new family representative.
Lucas asked why Carter needed the original blue file if electronic copies existed.
Priya answered, “Because Isabel’s trust amendment may contain a physical authentication seal. Without it, Carter can argue every copy was fabricated.”
