Chapter 22 - DON’T MARRY HER

Mia ran toward Lucas, crying so hard she struggled to breathe.

“Don’t marry her!”

Lucas stopped instantly.

The wedding music cut off. Guests turned in shock. Several raised their phones.

The security guard rushed toward Mia and grabbed her arm.

She struggled, reaching for Lucas.

“Please! You have to listen to me!”

Lucas saw terror in her face and the red mark forming beneath the guard’s fingers.

“Let her go.”

The guard hesitated, hearing a conflicting order through his earpiece.

Lucas stepped down one marble stair. “Now.”

The man released her.

Mia ran to Lucas and grabbed his tuxedo sleeve with both hands. He did not touch her until she chose the contact.

“I’m Lucas,” he said quietly.

“I know.”

“Your advocate and Grace are safe. You don’t have to give me anything.”

Mia shook her head violently. “You don’t understand.”

She looked into his eyes.

“If you marry her, you’re in danger.”

Lucas’s expression became serious, although he knew no marriage would occur.

“Why?”

Mia turned and pointed directly toward Carter near the church doors.

“Because of him.”

Lucas followed her hand.

Carter did not run. He looked offended, as if a child had interrupted a lawful proceeding.

Before Lucas could respond, the church doors opened.
