Chapter 24 - THE BLUE FILE BENEATH HER HOODIE
Mia’s advocate reached the steps with Grace and federal agents. Grace stopped when she saw the child behind Lucas.
“Mia.”
The girl left Lucas and ran into Grace’s arms. Relief did not erase anger.
“You disappeared,” Mia sobbed.
“I went to protect the ledger and failed to tell you safely. I am sorry.”
Grace did not praise Mia for reaching the church. She told her no document should have become her responsibility.
The child advocate asked whether Mia wanted to surrender the file. Mia nodded but chose Priya, not Lucas, to receive it.
Priya placed it in a transparent evidence sleeve under public observation. The seal matched Isabel’s authenticated estate instruments.
Carter objected that a minor had stolen privileged papers.
“From whom?” Priya asked.
He answered too quickly. “From my client archive.”
The revocation was addressed to the Moreno trustees, not Carter. His claim of possession connected him to a document he had denied existed.
Valeria descended the steps and stopped several feet from Mia.
“I was trying to tell security to get you away from him,” she said.
Mia looked at Carter, then back at Valeria. “You told him where we lived.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he would come?”
“I knew he might. I chose to believe what made me less afraid.”
Valeria apologized without asking the girl to understand.
Carter opened his portfolio and produced the emergency custody paper. The police liaison read the case number and contacted the issuing court.
No judge had signed it.
Carter blamed Brooke.
Brooke stepped forward with her own attorney. She had already entered a cooperation agreement. Her phone contained Carter dictating the document and ordering the security chief to remove Mia through the service corridor before city police intervened.
