Chapter 19 - THE MORNING WITHOUT VOWS
On the wedding morning, Lucas dressed in the black tuxedo selected months earlier. There would be music, flowers, guests, and a bride at the doors. There would be no legal marriage.
The officiant knew. So did the court monitor, prosecutors, Priya, and Valeria’s independent lawyer. Guests were told only that an important family announcement would precede the ceremony.
Lucas disliked the deception. Priya argued that revealing every detail would alert Carter and might send Mia toward a new destination.
“Then we disclose as soon as she is safe,” Lucas said. “No edited story about a heroic groom.”
Valeria wore the white gown because Carter expected the image. She asked her stylist to remove the family diamonds and chose no veil until the final minutes.
“This dress used to mean I had escaped my past,” she told her lawyer. “Now it feels like evidence.”
Her lawyer reminded her she could withdraw. Cooperation did not require public self-destruction.
Valeria remained because Carter’s revised papers named her as witness and temporary trustee. She wanted him to present them under observation.
Grace waited with federal agents away from the church. Elena remained in protected medical care. Mia was still missing.
At ten thirty, a bus driver reported a barefoot-looking child in worn sneakers asking for the grand church. By the time police reached the stop, Mia had boarded another route.
At eleven fifteen, the wedding security chief received Carter’s written instruction: if Mia appeared, classify her as a theft suspect and remove her through the east service corridor.
