Chapter 13 - THE HOSTAGE PHOTOGRAPH
Image analysis found inconsistencies. Grace’s hair was shorter than in recent footage. A newspaper edge in the frame carried a date from three years earlier.
The photograph came from an earlier period when Carter briefly detained and threatened her. It did not prove Grace was currently his hostage.
The message still originated from a device connected to Carter’s firm.
Grace’s disappearance might be voluntary. Naomi found a cash withdrawal and train ticket purchased under an alias Grace had used before. She may have gone underground after learning the advocate’s tablet was compromised.
Mia did not know that. To her, the threat was immediate.
Lucas recorded a public video asking Mia to contact her advocate and promising the wedding would not complete without hearing her. Priya advised against revealing investigative details.
Carter released his own statement. He called Mia an emotionally exploited child being used by disgruntled former employees to disrupt a wedding.
He offered safe surrender through his office.
The message was aimed at Mia. It framed every other adult as dangerous while presenting the man she feared as lawful authority.
Mia responded by mailing half a page from the blue file to a local reporter. It showed Carter acknowledged Elena was alive two years after declaring Mia’s maternal line extinct.
The reporter verified the ink and seal with Priya before publishing a redacted image.
Carter sued for defamation and theft of privileged materials. The complaint identified the page as genuine while arguing it lacked context.
His legal counterattack unintentionally authenticated part of the file.
